Joris Smit grew up in the village of Tolbert, near Groningen in the Netherlands. Early on, he discovered the pleasure of acting, at De Noorderlingen. After graduating as an actor from theater academy in Maastricht, he returned to Groningen to play there for four years under the direction of Koos Terpstra at the Noord Nederlands Toneel. This was followed by working at plays with theater companies such as theater Artemis, De Warme Winkel, Toneelschuur productions and Het Derde Bedrijf. In 2013 he became a permanent employee at Het Nationale Toneel in The Hague and played in, among others, Midzomernachtdroom, Tasso, De Revisor, Ondine, Het Duel, De wereld volgens John and Oust Faust. Over the years he received several nominations as best supporting and best lead actor in theater (one time Arlecchino and two times Louis d'Or), and awards (Guide de Moor prize). Joris can also be seen in many television and film productions. Some of the projects he did include Van der Valk, De Fractie (leading role for 3 seasons), 2/11 Het Spel van de Wolf and Flat Earth. For the feature film Lotus by Pascale Simons he received a Dutch Academy Award nomination as Best Actor. Joris plays one of the leads in the NPO series NOOD, that just wrapped up shooting the second season.
